Monopoly Dice Rules & Probabilities
Understanding dice rules and probability in Monopoly can give you a real strategic edge. From doubles rules to jail mechanics to knowing which properties get the most traffic — here's everything you need to know about dice in Monopoly.
Basic Dice Rules in Monopoly
On your turn, roll two standard six-sided dice and move your token forward by the total. If you land on an unowned property, you may buy it. If it's owned by another player, you pay rent. If you land on a Chance or Community Chest space, draw a card. Simple enough — but the dice add layers of strategy through doubles and probability.
Doubles Rules
When both dice show the same number (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.), that's doubles. After taking your turn, you roll again and take another turn. If you roll doubles a second time, you go again. But if you roll doubles a third consecutive time, you go directly to Jail — do not pass Go, do not collect $200. The probability of rolling doubles on any single roll is 16.67% (1 in 6). The chance of three consecutive doubles is only 0.46% (about 1 in 216).
Going to Jail
You go to Jail in three ways: landing on the "Go to Jail" corner, drawing a "Go to Jail" card, or rolling three consecutive doubles. To get out, you can: pay $50 before rolling, use a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, or try to roll doubles on your next three turns. If you fail to roll doubles in three tries, you must pay $50 and move the total shown. Strategy tip: early in the game, get out of Jail quickly to buy properties. Late in the game, staying in Jail can be beneficial — you collect rent without risking landing on developed properties.
Movement Probability and Property Values
Since 7 is the most common 2d6 roll (16.7% chance), properties 7 spaces from frequently visited squares get the most traffic. The most landed-on non-corner spaces are Illinois Avenue, Go, B&O Railroad, and Free Parking. The orange properties (St. James Place, Tennessee Avenue, New York Avenue) are statistically the best investment — they're 6-8 spaces from Jail, where players frequently are, making them the most landed-on color group. The light purple/Mediterranean properties are the worst investment due to low rent and low traffic.
The Speed Die (Optional Rule)
Monopoly's Speed Die is an optional third die included in some editions. It has faces: 1, 2, 3, Mr. Monopoly, Mr. Monopoly, Bus. Add the 1, 2, or 3 to your normal roll total. Mr. Monopoly means you advance to the next unowned property (or owed rent if all are owned) after your turn. Bus means you can choose to use only one of the standard dice for your movement. The Speed Die makes games significantly faster and adds another layer of strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if you roll doubles three times in Monopoly?
You go directly to Jail without completing your third turn. You don't pass Go and don't collect $200. This prevents players from getting unlimited turns through consecutive doubles.
What are the best properties to buy in Monopoly?
Statistically, the orange properties (St. James, Tennessee, New York) offer the best return on investment. They're frequently landed on because they're 6-8 spaces from Jail, and Jail is the most visited square. Railroads are also excellent investments with consistent returns.
What is the most common dice roll in Monopoly?
7 is the most common total when rolling two dice, with a 16.67% probability. This is followed by 6 and 8 (13.89% each). The least likely totals are 2 and 12 (2.78% each).
Should I pay to get out of Jail early?
It depends on the game phase. Early game: pay $50 to get out immediately — you need to buy properties. Late game: stay in Jail as long as possible to collect rent safely while opponents land on your developed properties.
